Punch, the young Japanese macaque whose unlikely bond with a stuffed orangutan made him an international social media favourite, has reached an important milestone. The monkey is celebrating his first birthday this weekend, and the zoo caring for him says he is healthy and continuing to settle into life with the rest of his troop. In an email to CTVNews.ca, sent in Japanese and translated into English, Ichikawa Zoo and Botanical Garden Director Takashi Yasunaga said Punch has made remarkable progress over the past year. “Punch is very healthy and we are happy he is now one year old,” Yasunaga wrote. The director said Punch now lives among more than 60 monkeys on Monkey Mountain and has adapted well to life in the group. “Many of them are welcoming of Punch,” Yasunaga said. The update marks a dramatic change from the early months of Punch’s life, when videos posted online showed the baby Macaque, who was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth, struggling to be accepted by the other monkeys and appeared to seek comfort in the toy orangutan that quickly became a symbol of his resilience. Now, on his first birthday, the once timid infant appears to have found exactly what so many hoped he would, a place where he belongs. Punch’s story has resonated far beyond Japan, with millions of people following his progress online over the past year. Videos documenting his early struggles and gradual confidence around the other monkeys have generated an outpouring of encouragement from viewers who have cheered every small milestone. According to the zoo, more than 2,500 birthday cards have arrived from fans around the world. The messages are currently on display at the zoo and will remain on exhibit until Aug. 30. “They are wonderful cards by Punch’s fans,” Yasunaga said. The worldwide support has also helped improve conditions for the monkeys. In the translated email, Yasunaga said donations from Punch’s supporters funded the installation of air conditioning in the Monkey Mountain back area, helping keep the animals comfortable during Japan’s hot summer months. “We are very much appreciative of the support from people who care about our monkeys’ health,” he said.
