Potential strike could put the brakes on Grand River Transit bus routes

People who ride Grand River Transit buses may have to find another way to get around as a potential strike is looming at the end of the month.

The Region of Waterloo is negotiating with Unifor Local 4304, a union that represents approximately 850 Grand River Transit (GRT) employees, including operators, maintenance technicians, service attendants and reservationists.

On April 14, the union announced its members had voted 93 per cent in favour of strike action if an agreement couldn’t be reached before their collective agreement expires on April 30.

“This strong strike mandate sends a clear message to the employer that our members are united and prepared to take action to achieve a fair agreement,” Unifor National President Lana Payne said following the vote. “Transit workers keep communities moving every day, and they deserve fair wages, reliable scheduling, and benefits that reflect the essential services they provide.”

The union said negotiations began on Feb. 9 and, if a deal isn’t reached, they will be in a legal strike position as of Friday, May 1.

If a strike happens, GRT buses and MobilityPLUS services will not be running, however ION train service will continue as it is operated by Keolis.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear—they are ready to stand up for the respect and fairness they deserve,” Unifor Local 4304 President Heath Abbott said. “We are committed to reaching a fair agreement, but the employer needs to come to the table prepared to address the key issues facing our members.”

According to the union, another round of negotiations is scheduled for April 27 to April 30.
