Zebras at Edmonton Valley Zoo being moved to other facilities in Canada

The zebras at Edmonton's Valley Zoo are moving to a new home.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is saying goodbye to its Grevy’s zebras after decades of housing them.

In a social media post, the zoo said its zebras will be moving to other accredited facilities in Canada but did not say where.

“For the animal care staff it is a bittersweet day,” said Wayne Woods, animal care supervisor at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

“Two of the zebras that are about to leave us were born here at the zoo and so they’ve spent countless hours, as I always say, sometimes the animals we work with at the zoo we see more than our actual families.”

Saturday was the last day for people to visit their male zebras Cody and Tufani. The city says they left Edmonton on Sunday.

The female zebras are still at the zoo and will be leaving on Friday. The zoo has had zebras in its facility since the 1970s.

“This move is an important step as we prepare for a new construction project which will be announced at a later date,” the zoo said on social media last week.

Woods says the zoo isn’t ready to share exactly how the exhibits are changing.

Grevy’s zebras are an endangered species with fewer than 2,500 left in the wild, according to the zoo.
