Wild weather: Record snowfall and deadly flooding

CTV Edmonton's Josh Classen recaps a week of wild weather: winter storms in Toronto and the U.S., and flooding in Tunisia.

Here’s a look at some of the weather stories making headlines this past week.

Record snowfall in Toronto

Record-setting snowfall hit Toronto over the weekend.

Pearson International Airport recorded 46 cm of snow in one day. The previous single-day record was 37 cm in 1966.

Closer to 60 cm of snow fell in other parts of the region.

The snowstorm brought parts of the city to a standstill as schools and municipal offices were closed. Motorists who did venture out were caught in treacherous conditions with hundreds of collisions and at least one death reported.

Snow storm in U.S.

A massive winter storm slammed a large chunk of the United States. Inches of ice accumulation and heavy snow affected nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population.

At least 20 states declared states of emergency in response to the historic storm.

The high snow totals in parts of New York state and Pennsylvania were close to 80 cm. Officials say the storm is as least partly to blame for almost three dozen deaths. Widespread power outages could last several days in some states.

Deadling flooding in Tunisia

At least four people have died as a result of flooding in Tunisia.

Parts of that country saw historic rainfall of more than 20 cm (about 8 inches) in just over a day.

Officials say some regions haven’t had this much rain since the mid 1900s.
