We’re in the last week of springlike weather. Winter’s return isn’t far off

Our lengthy winter reprieve will continue through to the end of the week.

Daytime highs will be in the 5 to 8 C range today through Friday.

We’ll likely get two or three degrees above 0 C on Saturday and right around 0 C for a high Sunday.

So...it’s Monday that looks to be Edmonton first sub-0 C daytime high since Feb 1st.

You don’t have to look THAT far back to find a similar warm start to February. Back in 2023, Edmonton got above 0 C on 14 of the first 18 days, including 11 straight days above 0 C from the 3rd to the 13th THEN...between Feb. 19 and March 13...only two of those 23 days got above 0 C. That cold spell featured three consecutive days with highs below -20 C and a total of eight days with highs below -10 C.

There’s still some uncertainty with just HOW COLD it’ll get during this year’s incoming cold spell.

But, daytime highs will probably drop into the -10 to -15 C range for at least a few days and we may see a couple days with highs below -20.

As for how long it’ll last, it’s likely that we’ll have colder-than-average (highs below -4 C) temperatures right through to the end of February and possibly through the first week of March as well.

So...if you’ve been enjoying the springlike conditions, soak them up this week.

Winter’s coming back next week and it’s not just getting colder, it’ll get snowier as well.

We’ll probably pick up a few centimetres of snow through next week - every day has at least a chance of some flurries or accumulating snow.
