Edmonton will experience weather whiplash next week

We’re still in the warm spell for a few more days in Edmonton.

Temperatures top out around 7 C this afternoon and Friday will have a high around 5 or 6 C.

We’ll start to see a gradual cooling trend take hold through the weekend, but it’s next week that we’ll really see a dramatic shift.

It still looks like Monday will be our first sub-0 C daytime high since Feb. 1. But, a high in the -2 to -6 C range isn’t really cold.

By Tuesday, we drop to a high near -10 C. Then...highs will settle into the -12 C to -17 C range for a lengthy stretch of days.

Edmonton will probably be about 15 to 20 degrees colder through the back half of February than we’ve been through the first half.

Early indicators point towards daytime highs colder than -10 C right through to the end of February, so that’d be at least 10 straight days.

(That’s about equal to how long this current warm spell has lasted.)

Precipitation outlook:

There’s a slight chance of a brief shower or flurry in the Edmonton region tonight as some clouds move through. Friday night also has a slight risk of some mixed precipitation.

But, nothing significant is expected for either evening (if we get anything at all).

We’ll start to pile up some fresh snow next week as the cold air settles in. Tuesday’s the most likely day to get several centimetres of accumulation, although confidence in estimated snow totals is very low this far out.

Bottom line: We have a chance of snow every day next week and the best chance for some significant accumulation is Tuesday. How much all of that amounts to remains TBD.

One last thing...

If you read yesterday’s WxBlog, I talked about the chance of tying and then possibly setting a record for consecutive days of 7 C or warmer (in February).

Well...the clouds rolled in early Wednesday afternoon and capped the city’s high at 6.8 C. So, the streak ended at nine days and we tied for second-place on the list.

Tuesday was Edmonton’s 9th consecutive day above 7 C.

The record for the longest stretch of consecutive days above 7 degrees in February is 10 days in 1916.
