Warm today but a cold front will bring snow and wind Thursday

We’re into some warm air for a couple of days, although colder conditions will return for Friday/Saturday.

AND...despite the warm temperatures, Thursday will probably turn ugly later in the day.

For today, mostly cloudy skies and a high near 4 C in Edmonton this afternoon.

There are some flurries and pockets of light snow just north of the city this morning, but we’re not expecting much/anything in the city.

Heavier snow IS still expected in areas from High Level to Fort McMurray over the course of the next few days.

We also have a snowfall warning for the Icefields Parkway with upwards of 30 cm of snow possible by late Friday.

A cold front will swipe southward across the Edmonton region on Thursday and that’ll probably create some issues for the afternoon commute.

Temperatures will get a few degrees above 0 C midday Thursday (ahead of the front). But, as the cold front moves through, we get a chance of some showers turning to wet snow in the afternoon and gusty wind.

Total accumulation of snow looks fairly minimal (1-3 cm likely)...and...given the warm temperatures, most roadways will be more wet than white.

The key to how ugly Thursday gets for commuters will be the timing of the front. If it arrives early in the afternoon, the drive home will probably feature icy roads and some blowing snow.

If the front holds off until later in the afternoon, roads will be more wet than icy... but blowing snow could be a bigger factor.

Either way, the morning commute will be a lot nicer than the late-day drive.

Temperatures plummet behind the cold front and we’ll be around -15 C by Friday morning with temperatures holding steady in that range through the day Friday.

There’s some uncertainty with snowfall for Edmonton Friday as it MIGHT all stay south of the city. If we do get some lingering snow in the area, accumulation should be minimal (1-3 cm likely).

Cold air stays in place through Saturday and then retreats on Sunday.
