Warm spell lasts until mid-month, then winter returns

We’ve had nine consecutive days with daytime highs above 0 C in Edmonton and it looks like we’ll stretch that streak out even longer in the coming days.

Afternoon temperatures should get above the freezing mark today through Saturday.

Sunday has a chance; right now, I’m forecasting 0 C for the high. But, we’ll see a return to sub-0 C highs on Monday.

If that’s how it plays out, we’d end up with 13 days above 0 C ... which is right around normal for the month.

Edmonton averages 12 days above 0 C in February.

More impressive is how FAR we’ve been above 0 C. Tuesday was Edmonton’s ninth consecutive day above 7 C.

The record for the longest stretch of consecutive days above 7 C is 10 days (1916). (Hat tip to @yegwxnerdery on Bluesky for digging up that stat.)

2025 and 1993 had seven straight days above 7 C. 1954 had eight in a row. 1896 had nine consecutive. But, the record is 10.

I’m forecasting highs of 7 C for today and Thursday. Assuming we get to at least 7.0 C both days, we’ll tie the record today and set a new record Thursday. (Tune in to CTV News Edmonton tonight at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to find out if we got there today.)

To be honest, Friday has a shot at hitting 7 C as well. So, there’s a chance that we could stretch this out to 12 consecutive days above 7 C.

The long-range forecast continues to show a sharp drop in temperature next week. Daytime highs will slip into the -5 to -10 C range by Tuesday/Wednesday and then even colder after that.

There’s still some uncertainty with just HOW COLD and for how long. But, I think we could see at least a few days with highs near -15 C.
