It’s setting up to be another day of storms across central and north-central Alberta, including the Edmonton region. Unlike Monday, those storms are expected to move through the Edmonton region late this afternoon and/or early this evening. Like Monday, severe storms are possible in parts of the region with large hail, potentially damaging wind gusts and downpours (possibly causing localized flooding, again). Given the atmospheric setup, tornadoes are also possible, especially in areas west and north of Edmonton. Here’s the thunderstorm outlook from Environment and Climate Change Canada: Thunderstorms will develop early this afternoon in western Alberta and then move east-north-east through the afternoon and evening. Pay close attention to weather alerts as they get issued throughout the day. Remember: “watch” means possible; “warning” means the severe weather is happening or imminent. Edmonton is about 20 mm away from setting the record for the wettest July on record (and wettest month on record). It’s possible that the record gets set today. As of Monday, here are the top three months for rainfall in Edmonton: As I mentioned last on air last night, this is already the wettest summer on record for Edmonton and we haven’t even hit August yet. We should get a break from the storms on Wednesday and Thursday in Edmonton. There’s a slight risk of a shower/thunderstorm late Thursday night, but the likelihood is very low. In fact, the city should be mostly dry through Wednesday-Friday. Storms are possible late Saturday and there’s a decent chance of some showers on Sunday. Here’s the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Sunny with a few clouds. Increasing cloud late in the afternoon. High: 26 Tonight - 60% chance of a thunderstorm early in the evening. Clearing overnight. 9pm: Wednesday - Sunny with a few clouds. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 23 Thursday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 24 Friday - Partly cloudy.
