The morning fog will dissipate by mid-morning across central Alberta and we’ll get some clearing Friday afternoon. There are still a few scattered showers south and southeast of the Edmonton region, but they’re mostly sliding past the south edge of the Edmonton region. Areas from Red Deer to Camrose will see those showers push out by the end of the morning. Partly cloudy and close to 20 C for a high in Edmonton Friday afternoon, just a slight risk of a few isolated showers in the area late in the day. Most of the city and surrouding areas should stay dry though. There’s a better chance for some pop-up showers and thunderstorms for areas northeast of Edmonton Friday afternoon and there’s (again) a risk of some funnel clouds developing. This type of cold-core funnel cloud doesn’t pose a significant tornado threat. But, given the low cloud bases, a landspout tornado isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility. Don’t be surprised if some funnel cloud advisories are issued Friday afternoon, particularly in areas from around Fort Saskatchewan to Fort McMurray. A weak upper ridge starts to push up from the south through the weekend and that should bring sunnier skies and warmer temperatures. We’re anticipating daytime highs in the low to mid 20s Saturday/Sunday in the Edmonton area. Watch for some thunderstorms to develop in western Alberta Saturday afternoon (possibly some isolated severe storms). It’s possible one of those shower/thunderstorm cells moves through the Edmonton region late Saturday night (overnight), but the chances look fairly slim. The warmer air will stick around for a while. After a string of days with highs below 20 C, afternoon temperatures should hit the low to mid 20s throughout next week.
