One more chilly day, then a warming trend starts Thursday

Cloudy, cool and some occasional flurries/light snow for the third straight day in Edmonton.

We’re off to a chilly start with temperatures below -15 C and wind chill in the -20. But...we should get back to single digits this afternoon (high near -8 C) with fairly light wind (wind chills in the -13 C range this afternoon).

Warmer air starts to push in from the west on Thursday and Edmonton should get a degree or three above 0 C.

That warming trend continues through Friday-Sunday with daytime highs a handful of degrees above 0 C Friday/Sunday and close to 10 C on Saturday.

Precipitation outlook: Occasional pockets of flurries or light snow are likely in the Edmonton region today, but no major accumulation is expected.

That said, areas just north and northwest of the city could pick up 5+ cm of snow, mainly this morning.

After today, the pattern shifts and we get a few snow-free days (to go along with the warming trend).

We’re eyeballing Sunday as the next potential snow day. There’s still some uncertainty with precipitation type (it could start as rain and then flip over to snow) and amount. But, the potential exists for some significant accumulation in parts of central and north-central Alberta.

LONG range outlook: Cooler air drops back in for next week with daytime highs dropping into the -3 to -8 C range.
