Mild air returns, but only for a few days

The cold spell is over as temperatures are climbing back to around average today and above 0 C on Wednesday and Thursday in Edmonton.

We were already warmer at 7 a.m. than the city’s been in just over a week.

A series of low-pressure systems will zip across northern Alberta in the coming days.

Those systems will help to draw in the milder air over central and southern Alberta, while dropping several waves of snow on the north.

Areas from Peace River/High Level east toward Fort McMurray could pick up 10-20 cm of snow by the end of the week and 5-10 cm is possible for the Grande Prairie/Slave Lake/Cold Lake regions.

For Edmonton and surrounding areas, we may see a couple pockets of flurries or light snow.

But, it shouldn’t accumulate to much more than 1-3 cm. That said, Monday’s fluffy snow accumulated a little more than anticipated, so we’ll see how it plays out.

It’s unlikely that we’ll get a dump of 5+ cm today or Wednesday. I think Thursday has the chance to be a bit more significant as a cold front sweeps through.

That cold front will bring an end to the short-lived warm spell and haul in some colder air for Friday/Saturday.

Daytime highs will go from a few degrees above 0 C Wednesday/Thursday to the -10 to -15 C range for Friday/Saturday.

Looking longer range: A similar pattern is shaping up for next week with milder air getting drawn in Sunday/Monday and then a cold front blasting through with some snow Monday night and a drop back into a couple of cold days.

Beyond next week’s Tuesday/Wednesday “chill”...we’re expecting temperatures to settle in the +3 to -3 C range for a string of days.
