Hawrelak Park to reopen March 13

After three years of rehabilitation work, William Hawrelak Park will be reopening for “casual use” Friday.

The City of Edmonton says visitors should expect active construction areas and perimeter fencing to remain in place.

The park’s new playground, lakefront promenade, pavilion and updated washrooms as well as a new perimeter path and trails will be accessible to the public

The park’s grand re-opening will fall on May 30, when all construction is expected to be complete and full services will be available. Festival, event and picnic bookings will become available June 1.

Work on the $134.6-million park began in March 2023 to address its aging infrastructure.

Upgrades to the park include reshaping the pond, adding an accessible lakefront path with fireplaces and seating, as well as renewing pavilion, picnic shelter and boathouse facilities.

Other updates include moving parking spaces from the entrance road to the parking lot and creating a mixed-use path separate from vehicle traffic.

Hawrelak Park opened under the name Mayfair Park in 1968.
