It’s staying warm through the weekend in Edmonton

Cory Edel's forecast is showing more warm days ahead.

Temperatures started climbing early Thursday morning in Edmonton and it looks like we’ll level off in the 9 C to 11 C range through the morning and midday hours.

Then... a bit of a cool down through the mid-to-late afternoon will have us around 5 C by suppertime today.

The record high for Feb. 5 is 12.2 C (1886). So, we’re going to be a lot closer to that than I had anticipated.

But...I think we’ll probably come up short of a second consecutive record-setting day. Wednesday (Feb. 4) hit a new record high of 10.2 C.

That was just one of about two dozen weather stations in Alberta that hit new records highs.

We’re expecting a little bit of a dip in temperatures in the coming days.

Daytime highs should be in the 5 C to 8 C range for Friday-Sunday.

Then...a couple days closer to 0 C Monday/Tuesday.

I should point that the models have been getting the trend of the temperature pattern fairly correct, but they’ve been consistently too cool.

So, there IS some uncertainty with those forecast highs over the next 5 or 6 days.

Bottom line: We’ll stay well above average through to the end of the weekend, but not quite as warm as Wednesday and today.

Monday/Tuesday should be the coolest days (but still warmer than average and probably just slightly above 0 C).

There’s likely a little warming trend for mid next week.

No cold days through to mid-month, but a return to seasonal or slightly colder than average temperatures is likely in the week following Valentine’s Day.

Precipitation outlook:

We should get a couple dry days for most of the province to close this week.

Snow and a freezing rain risk return to northern Alberta on Sunday. I’ve put a “chance of a shower” in the forecast for Edmonton Sunday, but it looks unlikely.

Rain and snow are also forecast to move through southern Alberta on Monday, but that will probably stay well to the south of the Edmonton region.
