Edmonton weather: Mild today with the melt starting Friday/Saturday

Cory Edel's forecast is showing a chance of flurries in Edmonton on Wednesday.

Cloudy with a chance of a few flurries today, especially midday in the Edmonton area.

No significant snow is expected. But, as a push of mild air continues to move in from the west, we have scattered pockets of precipitation across central and northern Alberta.

Further north, that snow is mixed with some showers in parts of the Peace Country this morning. Later today, the snow will intensify in northeastern Alberta and 2-5 cm is possible tonight.

Temperatures should be slightly cooler than Tuesday, but still above average in Edmonton. We’ll get to a high of -2 C or -3 C this afternoon.

Then...some clearing overnight tonight and we’ll get slightly above 0 C Thursday afternoon.

That should be the start of a long string of days with afternoon highs above the freezing mark.

We’ll get to the 2 to 5 C range for Friday-Monday with Saturday likely ending up as the warmest of those days.

Looking LONG range: The freeze-thaw cycle continues through next week with daytime highs in the 3 to 8 C range and mornings in the -2 to -8 C range.

Precipitation outlook:

An area of low pressure slides across northern Alberta on Friday.

That system will bring some rain and freezing rain to northwestern Alberta Friday morning and snow for the High Level region.

The Edmonton area gets a chance of a shower (possibly some freezing rain) late Friday afternoon or evening.

THEN...widespread freezing rain is possible in areas from Vermilion-Lloydminster north towards Cold Lake and Lac La Biche late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

The Fort McMurray area gets a chance of snow or freezing rain late Friday night/early Saturday.
