Edmonton Muslims mark Eid al-Adha celebrations with prayers and gathering

Edmontonians held special prayers Wednesday morning at different mosques in the city including at the Edmonton Islamic Academy.

As millions of Muslims mark Eid al-Adha by making the journey to Mecca for Hajj, Muslim Edmontonians are holding their own celebrations.

Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is the largest Islamic holiday around the world. It honours prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of faith.

Special prayers took place Wednesday morning at different mosques around the city, including at the Edmonton Islamic Academy.

“We celebrate by coming together as a community, observing prayer, doing sacrifice and just celebrating together,” said Noor Al-Henedy, a spokesperson with Al Rashid Mosque.

Al-Henedy says the Muslim community has been gathering since 7 a.m. to observe prayer. The holiday follows a lunar calendar and shifts around 10 days a year, Al-Henedy said.

“Eid al-Adha is a time to reflect on the values of generosity, love, sacrifice, compassion and devotion to faith. Celebrations are marked by reflection, gratitude and support for those in need,” said Multiculturalism Minister Muhammad Yaseen in a Wednesday news release.

“We extend our heartfelt wishes to all those celebrating. May the year ahead be one of many blessings.”

The Islamic Academy is hosting a carnival Wednesday night, including fireworks. It’s open to the public.
