‘It’s awful’: Fire rips through south Edmonton strip mall

Published:

Many business owners showed up to work on Tuesday to discover their building had been damaged by fire overnight. CTV News Edmonton's Evan Kenny has the story.

A strip mall in south Edmonton is closed after an overnight fire.

Just after midnight, 12 crews responded to a fire at a strip mall in the area of 92 Street and 34 Avenue.

No injuries have been reported, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said.

It’s unclear how many businesses were affected but at least one appears to have been destroyed.

A business owner told CTV News Edmonton he was worried when he heard about the fire.

“I’ve been here 27 years now and so it was little concerning driving in,” Mitch Carr with Alliance Orthodontics said. “I wasn’t sure whether it was my office that was burnt down. I feel sorry for the people that it’s happened to. Hopefully sooner or later I can get back to getting my work done.

It will be at least two days before people can enter again, one worker told CTV News Edmonton.

“This is very unfortunate,” Harsimran Singh with Vision Law Group said.

“It’s awful. We can’t work. We have clients that we need to take care of. This is very unfortunate as well.”

The fire was declared out just before 11:30 a.m. and it is under investigation.
