Cool, cloudy and periods of snow today and Wednesday

Pockets of snow continue to ripple eastward along a front lying across north-central Alberta.

So, it’s basically the same story as yesterday for Edmonton: cloudy with occasional periods of light snow through the day.

Anywhere between a dusting to 3 cm is likely by the end of the day.

Further north, 10-15 cm is possible in areas from Peace River southeast to Slave Lake.

Wednesday morning will be interesting to watch play out. Another pocket of snow is expected to push through areas just north of Edmonton and could drop 5-10 cm of snow on the Westlock/Morinville/Smoky Lake regions.

While the modelling has this snow staying north of Edmonton, if the track of that moisture were to shift just slightly south, the city could pick up a few centimetres of snow early Wednesday.

Cooler air remains in place across central Alberta with cold, arctic air sitting over the northeast corner of the province.

In the Edmonton area, we’ll see temperatures slip to the -12 C range by mid to late this afternoon.

Wind should be relatively light this morning, but we’re expecting it to pick up a bit around lunch time. So... wind chills will likely be in the -15 to -20 range through mid-day and this afternoon.

We’ll get one more colder-than-averge day Wednesday with temperatures in the minus teens in the morning and a high near -9 C.

Then...warmer air starts to push back across central Alberta and temperatures climb just slightly above 0 C on Thursday.

Friday-Sunday will all have afternoon temperatures well above 0 C, although there’s some uncertainty with just HOW warm we’ll get.

I’m going with highs of 4 C on Friday, 7 C on Saturday, and 4 C on Sunday. But...there’s a chance we’re a couple degrees warmer than that. I would expect the city will be somewhere within a degree or two of those forecast highs though.

Looking long range: The end-of-week warm up will give way to some cooler air early next week as daytime highs are expected to drop back into the -3 to -8 C range for a few days.

Typical March... a few warm days, a few cool days, then back to a few warm days....etc., etc.
