Canadian serial killer Allan Legere dies at Edmonton Institution at age 78

Notorious serial killer Allan Legere, known as the "Monster of the Miramichi," died at the Edmonton Institution where he was serving out his life sentence.

A notorious Canadian serial killer has died at the Edmonton Institution.

Allan Legere, 78, died on Monday, Correctional Service Canada has confirmed.

Legere was serving a life sentence which started on Jan. 22, 1987.

Known as the “Monster of the Miramichi,” Legere had convictions for second-degree murder and first-degree murder.

He and two others were involved in a violent convenience store robbery in Black River Bridge, N.B. in June 1986.

The elderly couple that owned the store were assaulted and the man, John Glendenning, died of his injuries.

Legere was on legislated mandatory release at the time of the offence.

He was convicted of second-degree murder in January 1987 and sentenced to life in prison.

In May 1989, Legere escaped from custody while at a hospital in Moncton, N.B. and was at large for about six months.

During that time, Legere sexually assaulted and killed Annie Flam on May 28, 1989, before setting fire to her Chatham, N.B. apartment.

On Oct. 13, 1989, Legere killed sisters Donna and Linda Daughney at their Newcastle, N.B. home where he also set fires.

On. Nov. 15, 1989, Legere killed Father James Smith in Chatham Head, N.B.

On Nov. 23, 1989, Legere took two people hostage in a vehicle, including a taxi driver and an off-duty RCMP officer before jumping into a semi and forcing the driver to transport him.

He was arrested the same night.

In 1991 he was convicted of first-degree murder for the four deaths he was involved with while he was at large.

Legere was sent to prison in Fredericton, N.B.

In 2015 he was transferred to the prison in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que. and ultimately to the Edmonton Institution.

Legere’s cause of death has not been released.

Correctional Services of Canada says police and the coroner have been notified.
