Board votes to keep rural west-central Alberta school open

The Fulham Community School west of Edmonton has been saved from closure.

A rural school west of Edmonton on the brink of closing has been saved.

The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division board voted five to two Wednesday to keep the Fulham Community School open.

The school division’s administration had recommended that the school close for operational and financial reasons.

The school’s enrollment for 2026-27 had dropped below the provincial threshold of 35 students, meaning it would lose nearly $500,000 in grant funding.

The school is located in Yellowhead County 50 kilometres south of Whitecourt on Highway 32, about 170 kilometres west of Edmonton.
