1 hospitalized, several rescued from balconies in apartment complex fire

One person was rushed to hospital as fire crews battled flames at an apartment complex on 48 Street and 137 Avenue just after 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Police asked commuters to avoid 50 Street and 137 Avenue early Monday morning because of a fire in an apartment complex in the area.

The blaze at Wyndham Crossing Apartments, located at 4807 137 Ave., was reported around 5:30 a.m. The first crews on scene called for back up around 5:45 a.m.

“We had people that needed rescuing off balconies so crews did a really good job working together, getting those people to safety with ladders off the balconies,” said district chief Jay Kilgannon.

According to him, one resident was hospitalized. He did not know the extent of their injuries.

A firefighter was also treated by EMS at the scene.

The fire was declared out at 9:30 a.m.

The cause is under investigation.
