Commemorative game celebrates legacy of the ‘Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes’

More than just a game and a celebration of Black History Month, Dartmouth hosted what can be best described as a sports journey back in time, to honour the ‘Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes.’

It was a league that featured only Black players and existed from the late 1800s until the 1930s.

“‘The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes’ deserves a place in hockey history, not only in this province but in the country and internationally as well,” said Hockey Nova Scotia’s Chair of Diversity and Inclusion Dean Smith.

The league was founded by Halifax church leaders and featured teams in seven cities and towns, including the historic Black community of Africville.

“We’re reviving it step-by-step. and tonight is one of those steps,” added Smith.

As a celebration of the league’s place in Canadian hockey history, a throwback game was played, reviving two long-lost teams: the Halifax Eurekas and the Hammonds Plains Moss Backs, with a big assist from local African Nova Scotian players, who skated for both teams.

“Seeing all these people, and getting on the ice with them, to play with them or against (them), it’s great,” said Evie Rothenburg who also plays for the Dalhousie University women’s hockey team. “It makes me feel seen and feel comfortable.”

To preserve its memory and legacy, Parks Canada has designated the “Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes” as an event of national historic significance.

“It’s important for me and important for the next generation coming up,” said former junior player Josh Crooks, who played in the game. “It’s good to know where you come from and the rich history within this game.”

Five years ago, Canada Post unveiled a commemorative stamp, highlighting the history of the league and Hockey Nova Scotia has also launched educational initiatives, supporting diversity and inclusion within hockey.

It’s part of an effort to make sure the history of the “Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes,” isn’t lost to the past.
