Young driver caught driving 142 km/h in Calgary construction zone

Calgary police ticketed a young driver – and impounded their vehicle – after they were caught driving at 142 km/h in a construction zone last week.

Officers stopped a 17-year-old Class 5 GDL driver for speeding at 10 a.m. on April 24.

The posted speed limit in the area was 80 km/h and police say there were workers present when the driver was caught.

Upon further investigation, police also found the driver had an above-zero alcohol level.

“All drivers are required to obey posted speed limits, slow down in construction zones and drive sober. For Class 5 GDL drivers, this means a zero level of alcohol or drugs,” police said on X.

“No exceptions.”

As a GDL driver, under provincial law, the driver’s vehicle was impounded for seven days, their licence was suspended for 30 days, they were given a $240 fine and ordered to appear in court.
