Gas prices across Calgary are finally coming down. According to Gas Buddy, many Calgary stations are selling regular for about $1.30 per litre. North American crude prices have fallen more than 13 per cent over the past two weeks. That is partly due to the U.S. midterm results and expectations that more oil may be shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. Saturday morning on gasbuddy.com, the lowest price in the city was $1.18 at the Costco on Buffalo Run Road in the southwest. A Tempo on Macleod Trail was charging $1.25 and numerous others were at or below $1.29. On Oct. 3, one day after the province temporarily suspended the 13-cents per litre provincial gas tax, the price at the pumps spiked to around $1.75 per litre. Saturday on her call-in radio program Your Province, Your Premier, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the price of gas was a reflection of her government’s approach to the high cost of living. “We believe if you keep more money in people’s pockets, they’ll be able to afford their life,” she said, pointing to a $1,500 per year tax cut per couple and the suspension of the provincial fuel tax as evidence of her government’s concerns about affordability. “We have low gas prices here,” she said. “I came in (this morning) and they were $1.39.9 – they’re over $2 in Vancouver and in Newfoundland and Labrador, so you’re saving at least 50 bucks a fill up by being here,” she said. “That’s another Alberta advantage.” According to Gas Buddy’s latest update, the cheapest gas in Vancouver Saturday morning was $1.75 per litre at a Shell station in Surrey, while the cheapest litre in St. John’s Newfoundland was $1.80.
