Temperatures to sit between 9 and 19 degrees above average until early February

Warming trend continues for Calgary. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A persistently warm trend is continuing for southern Alberta – including in Calgary – with these elevated temperatures expected to last for at least another 10 days.

A ridge of high pressure situated over most of British Columbia is cutting into southern Alberta and producing westerly winds for Thursday.

In Calgary, sustained wind speeds of 20-40 km/h are expected with stronger wind speeds in the southwest corner of the province.

There has been a good amount of melting over the past couple of days and this is expected to continue on Thursday and Friday.

There is still a measurable amount of snow on the ground across the region, with the highest accumulations in the Rockies and across northern Alberta and B.C.

A freeze-thaw cycle will persist in Calgary, however with overnight temperatures that are between 15 and 19 degrees warmer than the average low of -14 C, the freezing component will be minor.

Daytime highs in Calgary are expected to range from 7 C to 13 C from Thursday until next Saturday, compared to the average high of -2 C.

There will be a mix of sun and cloud, and a slight chance of rain or mixed precipitation in Calgary late Friday and early Saturday, but it is more likely that heavier pockets of precipitation north and east of Calgary.

Some freezing rain is possible in areas with cooler layers in the atmosphere, but surface temperatures will dictate how much of an impact those supercooled water droplets might have.
