Singer-songwriter honours late reggae legend in ‘Bob Marley: How Reggae Changed the World’

Ian White speaks with Duane Forrest about how reggae changed the world ahead of his performance in Calgary on Feb. 6.

Singer-songwriter Duane Forrest wasn’t alive when Bob Marley was around, but Marley’s influence on him was inescapable.

“We’ve always had reggae music playing in the house. My mom had subwoofers at our place. You could feel the bass in your feet when you came to our place,” said Forrest, who grew up in Toronto, the son of Jamaican parents.

Forrest honours the late reggae legend in Bob Marley: How Reggae Changed the World at the National Music Centre on Feb. 6, which is Marley’s birthday.

Forrest is especially excited about visiting the Rolling Stones’ Mobile Studio at the National Music Centre.

Not only did the Stones and Led Zeppelin use it to record albums, but Marley also used it to record the live version of No Woman, No Cry in 1975.

“This is a dream come true that I had no idea was going to be happening,” said Forrest.

“This is such an amazing coincidence. I can’t wait.”
