Calgary is getting a new soccer field. The creating of the free-to-use community soccer pitch, announced on Tuesday, is a collaboration between the federal government, City of Calgary and Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Charities. The feds will kick in more than $2 million through Sport Canada. Jumpstart says the project takes it one step closer to its goal of building 25 community soccer fields across Canada by 2029. The location of the site and the timeline for building it will be determined through consultation with local community organizations. Deputy Mayor and Ward 4 Coun. DJ Kelly says Calgary continues to see strong demand for sport and recreation infrastructure. “This partnership will help expand access to sport, support active lifestyles and create more opportunities for children and youth to play, learn and connect in their community,” he said. Adam van Koeverden, federal secretary of state (sport), said the new soccer pitch will give Calgary kids the opportunity to “get outside, participate in sport and build a lifelong connection to the game.” More information on the project is expected to be released in the coming months.
