With snow in the forecast in Calgary this weekend, the Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners to turn down unsolicited furnace inspections. “As the cooler weather approaches so does the furnace scam,” the BBB Alberta and East Kootenay warned in a Thursday news release. Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen, the organization’s president and CEO, says they warn consumers about unsolicited furnace inspections every year — because every year, they receive reports from homeowners that someone knocked at their door offering to do one for free. “These individuals are out to make a quick buck from unsuspecting homeowners,” she said “Do not let anyone into your home who has not been properly identified. Call a reputable HVAC company with a strong track record to do this work, not a fly-by-night operator.” To avoid getting burned by a furnace scam, the BBB recommends comparing prices from several companies — and getting quotes in writing, as well as checking the BBB website for company reviews. “HVAC systems can be worth tens of thousands of dollars,” O’Sullivan-Andersen said. “Hire a reputable company if you need your furnace, or any of your HVAC systems inspected. Hiring a professional is an investment in your home, your safety and the best way to protect your hard-earned cash.” For more tips on how to hire a reputable HVAC organization, you can visit the BBB’s website.
