Discovery House is launching an ambitious campaign. The local non-profit organization provides provides shelter and support for families experiencing domestic violence in Calgary and after 20 years, the shelter needs an upgrade. The fundraising campaign is called “Rebuilding Futures.” Discovery House aims to raise $10 million to renovate the shelter to better support families who need a safe place to heal. It will also fund client programs and services. So far, the campaign has raised more than $8 million through private donations and help from the province. “Discovery House offers two, three and four bedroom units for families,” said Discovery House executive director Leslie Hill. “The larger units are in huge demand for large family sizes because we have the only ones in the city,” Hill added, “so it’s really important to us to preserve that housing stock, preserve safe spaces, for families to have the opportunity to heal.” Seventy per cent of Discovery House’s clients are children. Officials say 12 of its 19 apartments still need renovation. For more information, go here.
