Calgary police are reminding the public they’ll never demand cryptocurrency as part of an investigation. They won’t call you looking for gift cards, either. Nor will they come after your bank information or debit and credit card numbers. Someone dialling you up and telling you to provide any of the above is a sure sign of a scam, police say. Police posted the advice to social media late last week. The person calling might identify themselves as a member of the local force’s senior officers’ team, and the phone number showing on caller ID might even appear to be legitimate. They’re not, and it’s not, police say. Staff Sgt. Peter Duchnij, the real deal, says an actual member of the service “would never” behave in such a way. Duchnij said if you’re unsure the person on the line is actually a member of the service, ask questions. “You can ask them for their name, their badge number, the case number that they’re investigating,” Duchnij said in a video posted to Facebook. “And you can call 403-266-1234 and you can verify that information and then call the person back.” Police are encouraging people to speak with family and friends about impersonation scams to make sure they know what to watch out for. Incidents related to impersonation scams can be reported by calling police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
