Alberta government to announce more school projects

The Alberta government is scheduled to announce more new schools, many in the fast-growing city of Calgary. Mason DePatie has details.

The Alberta government is expected to announce another round of school projects through its Schools Now program on Thursday.

Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides and Infrastructure Minister Martin Long will make the announcement at Calgary’s McDougall Centre, joined by Calgary Board of Education chair Laura Hack and Calgary Catholic School District chair Lory Iovinelli.

The announcement will take place at 9:30 a.m.

The province has not released details in advance, but says it will identify additional school projects moving forward through Schools Now, which aims to accelerate the delivery of new schools, replacements and major modernizations.

The announcement comes as Alberta continues to experience rapid population growth, placing increasing pressure on school systems across the province.

Calgary has been among the fastest-growing communities, with many schools operating near or above capacity and some neighbourhoods relying on modular classrooms while awaiting permanent schools.

Schools Now is part of the province’s broader plan to expand Alberta’s school infrastructure in the coming years.
