Barrie police spotted a car making a wide right turn onto Owen Street entering the wrong lane of traffic Wednesday at around 10 p.m. The car was stopped on Berczy Street near Wellington Street East on suspicion of impairment. The driver refused to produce his licence or identify himself. When officers told him to shut off the vehicle, he tried to put the car into gear and, revving the engine, attempted to drive away. Finally, the passenger reached over and pulled the keys from the ignition. Police say that not only prevented the driver from fleeing but also staved off injury to police or other people. Following a brief struggle, the driver was placed under arrest and brought to the station where officers found suspected crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia. A 38-year-old Barrie man faces the following charges: Police remind drivers that they are legally required to produce their driver’s licence and identify themselves when pulled over by a police officer. Giving false information can lead to criminal charges.
