Driver clocked speeding 138 km/h in 80 zone hit with month-long licence suspension

A 55-year-old motorist will have to find another ride for a while after being charged with stunt driving in Essa Township.

Provincial police say a Nottawasaga OPP officer clocked a vehicle speeding 138 kilometres per hour on County Road 56 on Wednesday afternoon. The area has an 80 km/h speed limit.

The offence carries an immediate 30-day licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment at the owner’s expense.

Along with stunt driving, the motorist was charged with speeding and driving with a licence plate improperly displayed.

"Speeding and stunt driving are serious offences that endanger everyone on the road," police stated. "Drive responsibly. Arrive alive."

In Ontario, a stunt driving charge comes with harsh penalties.

Stunt driving applies for anyone caught speeding 40 km/h over the speed limit in an area posted under 80 km/h. For zones with a speed limit of 80 km/h or higher, motorists nabbed speeding 50 km/h or more over the limit will be charged and subject to a licence suspension and vehicle impoundment.
