Calling all artists to spruce up Barrie’s downtown

The City of Barrie is looking for public artists to help spruce up the downtown with public art installations to line the patios.

The City of Barrie could use your talents for the next public art program.

The Brightening Barriers program needs artists to showcase their public art installations under the themed umbrella, Rhythms of the City, that encompasses the patterns, movement and energy that makes up Barrie’s personality. These works of art will be used to decorate and enhance the downtown Barrie patios.

Think of the patio fencing as your blank canvas. Each chosen art piece will be displayed on the fence.

The patio fence, donated by a local business, will act as a makeshift outdoor art gallery, but a free and accessible cultural experience for the public.

The City welcomes artists from all different backgrounds and experiences, from emerging to those who are well-versed in art. From there, the City will choose six different pieces and the chosen works of art will mesh and coincide with one another along Barrie’s downtown.

For artists interested, there is a virtual information session on Tues., Feb. 24 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. where people can learn more and ask questions.

The deadline to apply is March 13.
