7 charges laid against ‘modified’ E-bike rider in Innisfil

A man from Innisfil is facing a number of charges as police claim the electric bike he was travelling on was modified.

Police stopped the man on Wednesday while he was travelling on 20th Sideroad south of Killarney Beach Road.

Police claim the man was travelling at 54 km/h.

Under Ontario law, e-bikes must not exceed speeds of 32 km/h.

If the bikes are deemed to have been modified in a way that changes their speed or power limits, police say the bike may legally be considered a motor vehicle by officers, as opposed to a power-assisted bicycle.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, motor vehicles require proper licensing, registration and insurance.

A 26-year-old Innisfil man has been charged with driving while under suspension, driving without a licence, driving without a permit and driving without plates, in relation to the incident.

He additionally faces charges of operating a motor vehicle without insurance, failing to surrender insurance card and modifying a power-assisted bicycle.
