Yarmouth man facing weapons charges following emergency alert: N.S. RCMP

A Yarmouth, N.S., man has been charged with multiple weapons offences after an emergency alert was issued in the community Friday.

RCMP were called to a fight between two people near the intersection of Forest and William streets.

Police say one of those involved had a firearm. When officers arrived the people, and vehicle they were reportedly travelling in, were gone.

“Investigators obtained descriptions of the person with the firearm and identified him as Christian Lasaga,” reads a news release from the Nova Scotia RCMP.

“Based on the public safety risk, an emergency alert issued through Alert Ready directing people to shelter in place.”

Police learned Lasaga was at a residence in Yarmouth around 7:20 p.m. that evening. Officers went to the home and he was arrested. The emergency alert was cancelled at 7:33 p.m.

“They also located and seized a firearm matching the description of the shotgun the Lasaga had been in possession of earlier in the day,” reads the release.

Lasaga, 30, has been charged with 16 offences including:

• possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
• unauthorized possession of firearm
• tampering with firearm serial number
• three counts of failure to comply with release order
• three counts of failure to comply with probation order

Lasaga also had an outstanding warrant associated with an unrelated investigation.

He appeared in Yarmouth provincial court Monday and remains in custody pending future court appearances.
