Woman sentenced to 4 years in prison after stabbing person 8 times in Shelburne, N.S.

A 34-year-old woman received a four-year sentence for stabbing another woman eight times in Shelburne, N.S., two years ago.

Sabrina Urquhart pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in connection to the stabbing, according to a written decision by Justice Joshua M. Arnold.

According to the agreed upon facts of the case, the victim told police she had been at a party on King Street on May 10, 2024. She went outside to get some fresh air, at which point Urquhart, who was in a home across from the party, started yelling over to her and “asking what she was laughing at.”

A verbal argument ensued and it soon escalated to a physical fight in the middle of the street. At one point, Urquhart pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim twice in her left breast, three times in her upper left torso and three times in her upper left back, according to the facts.

“Ms. Urquhart went back off the road and stood under a tree and began laughing,” the written decision reads. “Ms. Urquhart then returned to the residence on the property she had been at previously and stayed there until police arrived.”

Police found the knife, which had a four-inch blade and a black handle.

The victim went to hospital and an MRI revealed she needed surgery to repair a punctured bowel and spleen due to the stab wounds. She was later airlifted to the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

Urquhart, whose criminal record includes several previous assaults, was arrested at the scene.

Justice Arnold sentenced Urquhart to four years in prison, but due to her remand time of 778 days in custody, her sentence going forward will be 293 days in prison, followed by two years probation.
