‘Best doughnuts’: Haligonians brave bitterly cold conditions for one last treat at Vandal Doughnuts

It may have been freezing Sunday, but that didn’t stop dozens of people from lining up outside Halifax’s Vandal Doughnuts for one last treat.

When the store opened its doors for the final time, the temperature was around -19 feeling like -31 with the wind chill, according to Environment Canada.

“This is my family’s favourite doughnuts,” said Chris Course, who was waiting in line Sunday morning. “We love it here, so we had to do it.”

On Thursday, the popular shop announced it would be closing its remaining two locations Sunday. A previous location on Portland Street in Dartmouth closed last spring.

“We legitimately tried everything we could think of to keep the doors open, but it just wasn’t to be,” said owner Zoey Boosey in a social media post Thursday.

Vandal first opened in late 2017.

“That’s why we’re here… just to show our support and just help out. I’m not sure why they’re closing, but they were the best doughnuts. Definitely the best,” said Course.

Vandal Doughnuts shared on social media it sold out of doughnuts before noon Saturday and had planned to make extra Sunday to help meet the demand.

Boosey also owns Crème, a Parisian‑inspired café on the Halifax waterfront.
