Nova Scotia issues advisory about increased coyote activity

Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources has issued an advisory, cautioning people about the potential for increased encounters with coyotes.

Founder of Hope for Wildlife, Hope Swinimer says it’s because of the time of the year.

“It’s mating season so they’re much more vocal and out and about,” Swinimer says, “Don’t forget we had a lot of fires this year so there’s a lot of habitat that’s been destroyed for our natural world, so it’s not unusual to expect sightings.”

According to DNR, three people have been bitten or attacked by coyotes in Nova Scotia since 1995. One caused the death of a hiker in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in 2009.

Coyotes live in all parts of the province and sightings are not unusual. People can take steps to decrease the chances of a run-in with coyotes.

“Two really important things to remember is to keep food supplying away and inside your home if at all possible,” Swinimer says. “If you have pets, keep a really watchful eye. If you’re going for a walk with them, keep them on a short leash. Six feet is great.”

Swinimer says it’s uncommon for coyotes to approach humans but if one does, make yourself as big as possible and make a lot of noise but don’t run. She says carrying a whistle or a walking stick can also help turn a coyote back

“Don’t be surprised if you see a coyote sighting, it’s just like any other wild animal that we come across, Swinimer said. “Being prepared, knowing what to do, understanding, learning to live comfortably with nature is incredibly important.”

Swinimer says coyotes are most active during dawn and dusk. Mating season runs from January until the end of March.
