Museum of Natural History in Halifax closed two weeks for renovations

The Museum of Natural History in Halifax will be closed for two weeks starting Monday.

The last temporary exhibit – the annual holiday LEGO show, “Bricks By The Sea” – wrapped on Jan. 3. The museum has only been charging visitors donations since then.

“We would like people to come and visit the museum whenever possible but since we don’t have the full space and the full galleries that we usually do, we are not going to be charging people for visiting today,” says Tessa Biesterfeld, a naturalist interpreter at the museum.

The temporary exhibit space is being renovated until January 25. It was necessary to close the whole space during construction because of noise levels and safety precautions.

“We are hoping that by setting up a whole new floor that will allow us to better accommodate upcoming exhibits as well as future endeavors,” says Biesterfeld.

Staff will be coming in during renovations to care for the live animals. The museum will reopen to the public on January 26 and will begin preparations for their newest exhibit: Dinosaur Explorations 2.

“We always like going back in time and who doesn’t love dinosaurs,” says Biesterfeld.

Another Dinosaur exhibit a couple of years ago was a big hit, she says, but they are bringing in all new content for the new one, including big skeletons, fossils from the museum’s own collection and a few surprises.

The new exhibit will bring brand new experiences to the museum when it opens February 7, she says.
