Maritime athletes hit the pool at Dalhousie University in Halifax this weekend for the first major artistic swimming competition of the season.

Athletes from all three Maritime provinces hit the pool at Dalhousie University in Halifax this weekend for the first major artistic swimming competition of the season.

Artistic swimming, also known as synchronized swimming, combines ballet, gymnastics, and theatre in the pool. The choreographed routines are performed to music by swimmers who compete in pairs or groups.

“We have our older athletes; it’s their qualifying meet,” says Nova Scotia’s competition chair, Jordan Eaton. “They’re qualifying to go to the Canadian qualifiers in Quebec City in March. And then for the younger ones it’s just their invitational meet to kind of see if their routines are good, see if they coding is right and kind of work out any kinks before they go to their provincial qualifiers.”

One-hundred and twenty-eight male and female swimmers competed in age categories from eight to 50.
