N.B. government to review safety, security at nursing homes after sexual assault arrest

New Brunswick will be looking into the safety at long-term care facilities.

The New Brunswick government says it will review safety and security procedures at nursing homes across the province after a man was arrested for the alleged sexual assaults of 15 seniors within a care facility in Saint John.

In a statement Friday afternoon, Minister of Seniors Lyne Chantal Boudreau said the review’s focus would include the province’s own policies and procedures, as well as safety and security procedures in individual nursing homes.

On Tuesday,a 69-year-old unnamed man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting 15 nursing home residents between Dec. 26, 2025 and Jan. 19.

Saint John police confirmed the accused man is a family member of a resident at the nursing home. Loch Lomond Villa in Saint John confirmed Tuesday’s arrest was connected to a report it first made to Saint John Police on Jan. 21, which prompted the investigation.

“The individual has not been permitted on Loch Lomond Villa property since the investigation began, and this restriction remains in effect,” said a news release from Loch Lomond Villa.

For several weeks, the provincial government’s official response to the investigation had been to offer no comment, citing an ongoing police investigation. The announcement of a review on Friday afternoon followed calls from the official opposition this week.

“This should’ve been worked on the day after,” said Progressive Conservative MLA Margaret Johnson.

The province didn’t provide a timeline for its review.

The man who was arrested has been released and placed on conditions ahead of a court appearance on May 26.
