N.B. business owner speaks out after boat theft

The theft of a boat in Grande-Digue, N.B., is sparking a conversation about rural crime.

A New Brunswick business owner is speaking out after a recent boat theft, highlighting the challenges faced by small businesses and the need for community support in the face of rising property crime.

Owen Newcomb, owner of recreational business ONSports in Grande-Digue, reported the theft of a 16-foot boat, valued at $7,500.

“The issue isn’t as much the money as it is the situation,” Newcomb said, emphasizing the emotional toll of the crime. “You can’t help but feel violated.

The scary part is not losing the boat; what happens if you catch him in the act?" he said.

Newcomb said this is the sixth time his business has been targeted.

“In no situation has the RCMP been able to help us,” he said, acknowledging the RCMP’s challenges. “As a community, if we can just try to help. Neighbours are more likely to help you.”

Newcomb said they will try to put up more fences and gates, but he’s uncertain if it will fix the problem.

Mayor of Beausoleil Roméo Bourque told CTV News he is looking adding a community watch program.

Crime Stoppers New Brunswick president Jen Kelly-Barnett says in the last four decades, the organization has recovered over $38 million worth of theft.

“We can help those victims by reporting that anonymously. And you don’t have to take it into your own hands. There’s danger surrounded with that or potential danger,” Kelly-Barnett said.

The RCMP says they have yet to review the file. They advise the community to keep belongings secure and to report any suspicious activity.

According to the New Brunswick Justice and Public Safety website, the number of reported crimes exceeding $5,000 is projected to double by the end of the year compared to 2024.
