Second Alberta Clipper to bring snow, freezing rain, and rain to the Maritimes Wednesday night

CTV Meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has an update on the wintry mix of weather that will develop across the Maritimes Wednesday evening.

An Alberta Clipper is a fast-moving low-pressure system that originates on the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains.

The snowy start to the week for the Maritimes was a result of a clipper system moving past.

A second clipper system has brought southern parts of the Prairies a wintry mix and will bring similar weather to the Maritimes Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning.

Fast-moving system

As of Wednesday afternoon, the clipper was moving through southern Ontario. Snowfall amounts are expected to range from five-to-15 cm from London into the Greater Toronto Area. Further north, for Ottawa and southern Quebec, the snow totals are expected to reach closer to 15-to-20 cm.

The weather system speeds towards the Maritimes for Wednesday night.

Snow from the clipper arrives for communities in western New Brunswick by late Wednesday afternoon, with snow developing across New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Wednesday evening. Nova Scotia may see some initial snow Wednesday evening, but it will turn to rain.

The snow-rain line boundary is expected to push north into Fredericton and Prince County, P.E.I., by midnight Wednesday into Thursday. There is a risk of freezing rain and ice pellets mixing with the snow. Northern areas of New Brunswick remain as mostly snow.

The wintry mix of weather will clear the Maritimes, west-to-east, Thursday morning.

Snow and rain amounts

The snow Wednesday evening and night will add up to 10-to-20 cm across much of northern New Brunswick, higher amounts of 20-to-30 cm are possible in the more mountainous terrain.

Fredericton could pick up five-to-10 cm before turning to freezing rain and ice pellets between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Once snow turns to rain for southern New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I., about five-to-15 mm can be expected.

Southerly wind gusts of 30-to-60 km/h will accompany the wintry mix for most of the Maritimes Wednesday night. The exception will be northern New Brunswick, where the wind will remain out of the northeast.

Snowfall warnings issued

Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for much of western and northern New Brunswick.

The warning is in effect Wednesday night until Thursday morning and calls for snow totals of 15-to-20 cm.

The weather agency is cautioning that roads and walkways may become difficult to navigate and gusty winds accompanying the snow may reduce visibility.

The warning covers York, Carleton, Victoria, Madawaska, Restigouche, Glouchester (except for the Acadian Peninsula), and parts of Northumberland County.

A special weather statement covers Charlotte, Sunbury, and Queens Counties. Those areas of the province could see an initial 5-to-10 cm of snow before a turn through to ice pellets/freezing to rain.
