How much more snow is coming to the Maritimes?

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell has some initial reports for a spring snowfall that continues for parts of the Maritimes heading into Monday night.

An area of low pressure will continue to move past the Atlantic coastline of Nova Scotia Monday. Much of the remaining snow for the system will be centred on eastern Nova Scotia.

Southern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and western areas of Nova Scotia will receive light snow and flurries Monday afternoon and evening.

Steadier snow Monday evening and night is still expected in eastern areas of Nova Scotia. Guysborough County, Antigonish County, and Cape Breton could receive an additional five-to-15 cm of snow.

While there is a fair bit of melt with the snow as it falls on paved surfaces during the day Monday, that may change Monday evening and night. As temperatures fall through the evening, the snow could start to collect more on the roads. Eastern areas of Nova Scotia should be cautious of slippery spots developing in the remaining snow Monday evening and night.

Areas of lighter snow and flurries are expected for the North Shore of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton on Tuesday.

Winter storm warning in Newfoundland

The weather system is intensifying as it moves past the Maritimes and there are expected to be more significant weather impacts to Newfoundland Monday evening through Tuesday.

An elevated Orange Warning – Winter Storm has been issued for the Avalon Peninsula by Environment Canada. A snowfall of 20-to-40 cm is expected to be accompanied by easterly winds with gusts of 60-to-70 km/h. The worst of the weather conditions will be Monday night and Tuesday morning for the Avalon. Conditions improving by and through Tuesday afternoon.

Central areas of Newfoundland are under a Yellow Warning – Winter Storm. There will be snow amounts of 20-to-35 cm accompanied by gusty northeast winds through Tuesday.

Early snow reports

Some snowfall reports from volunteer observers in the Maritimes were available Monday morning. In some cases, snow continued to fall or more snow was expected at the time the measurements were made. The numbers should be considered preliminary and unofficial.

The initial snow that came across southwestern New Brunswick Sunday evening and night totals a few to several centimetres. That snow, along with additional snow off the Atlantic, totaled five-to-15 cm for western Nova Scotia.

Snow accumulation varied greatly depending on the surface it was falling on. There was a lot of melt on many of the roads. The snow collected more on surfaces such as decks, trees and car roofs.
