Winnipeg police have arrested a man after an elderly woman was assaulted last week.

On Feb. 25, an 83-year-old woman was taken to hospital following a reported robbery in the 300 block of William Avenue.

Police learned the woman had been walking when she was “physically assaulted” and fell to the ground.

Police said the woman continued to be assaulted until a witness intervened.

She suffered multiple serious injuries and remains in hospital in stable condition.

On Tuesday, police arrested a 27-year-old man from Winnipeg and he was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of failing to comply with condition of a release order.

He remains in custody and the charges against him have not been tested in court.
