Winnipeg Jets fans celebrate Game 7 win after a nail biting double overtime finish

Winnipeg Jets fans celebrate as the team pulls off a comeback win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 7 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The first game seven to be hosted by the Winnipeg Jets 2.0 at Canada Life Centre will be remembered by the fans for a long time.

A double overtime 4-3 thriller capped off by a tie breaker scored by Jets captain Adam Lowry.

“It was electricity”

Lisa McBride was one of the 15,225 fans inside the arena taking in every moment of the double overtime win.

“It was electricity,” McBride said.

“Everybody was hugging, high fiving. It was like everybody was just united. It was Winnipeg. Best Jets game I’ve ever watched and been to in my life.”

“They won for my birthday,” said Dominic, a young Jets fan who watched the game with his dad.

it was a tense rollercoaster of emotions for the fans both inside and outside the arena. The sold out White Out street party erupted when the Jets clinched the win.

After surrendering two early goals in the first period, the Jets were able to get on the board with a power play rally by Cole Perfetti in the second. A 3-1 deficit looked insurmountable for the fans watching until the Jets rallied late in the third period.

The atmosphere on Donald Street changed in the final two minutes as Vladislav Namestnikov made it 3-2 and Cole Perfetti got the game’s equalizer with less than three seconds on the scoreboard.

“The last second goal in the third was amazing,” said Danny Shin who brought his own custom Jets signage to the street party.

“It was a rollercoaster right from the puck drop to the last goal.”

After the Jets tied the game, the big screen showing all the action on ice completely went black and shook above the ground. It was pandemonium amongst the thousands who watched outside.

Twenty minutes went by after the first overtime and fans were on their feet in the late stages of the second overtime. Two friends said they couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

“This is the first playoff game that we’ve ever attended and we got tickets last night,” said Daron Baxter who watched with her friend Leeann Bomak.

“We’re going to be hoarse trying to talk to each other. Their defense was on point, we had faith in them throughout the overtime periods,” Bomak said.

With 3:50 left in the second overtime, fans jumped for joy watching the Jets captain seal the victory.

“Adam Lowry showed why we got it done,” said Miles Morell.

“We won the President’s Trophy for a reason. Let’s show Dallas what’s up in the next round and get it done.”

The Winnipeg Jets will face the Dallas Stars who also punched their ticket to the second round of the playoffs with a Game 7 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

This was the 200th Game 7 played in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Perfetti’s goal with 2.2 seconds left on the scoreboard is the latest game tying goal in a Game 7 in NHL history.

Game 1 against the Dallas Stars will be hosted at Canada Life Centre on Wednesday May 7. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. central.
