Winnipeg committee looks at potentially lowering fees for fitness area at city pool

A city committee is looking at the possibility of reducing fees to encourage more people to use the weight room at a city pool.

A motion was discussed at the community services committee Wednesday exploring a rate reduction at Sherbrook Pool.

The motion highlights community use in the swimming pool has increased, but the fitness area is “underutilized.”

It blames aging equipment and higher entrance fees compared to other fitness facilities in the area.

“Reducing fitness area fees would make Sherbrook Pool a more inclusive and multi-purpose facility, welcoming individuals who may not wish to swim but still seek a place to exercise,” the motion reads.

For a single visit, it costs $8.14, and that gives people access to both the pool and fitness area.

“Lower fees can encourage families to use the facility together—for example, a parent using the treadmill while a child participates in swim lessons—thereby increasing the overall value and utility of the space.”

During Wednesday’s meeting, the committee directed the Public Service to review the rate and report back to council in 90 days.
