Winnipeggers are being warned of road closures in the North End as crews are scheduled to demolish a house in the area following a fire.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to the fire at a vacant home in the 700 block of Magnus Avenue just before 7:30 a.m.
When firefighters got to the scene, they found smoke and flames coming from the house, launching an exterior attack as it was not safe to go inside.
As of noon on Monday, crews remain at the scene and are using aerial ladders and handlines to extinguish the fire.
The home sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage and is set to be demolished due to structural concerns. Road closures in the area will remain in place until work is finished.
The City of Winnipeg warns that once the scene is clear, residents will need to use caution as the water used to fight the fire may freeze over and create slippery conditions. Crews will monitor the area and apply de-icing tools to roads and sidewalks.
No one was hurt in the fire, but the neighbouring homes were evacuated out of precaution. The city’s emergency social services team came to the scene to offer support to affected residents.
The fire is under investigation.
If you see someone entering a vacant building, the city asks that you call 911. If you notice boarded windows or doors have been breached, but don’t see someone trying to enter the building, you’re asked to contact 311.
