Canada’s extension to apply for or renew temporary visas for Ukrainians who have fled the war is being applauded.

The federal government announced the deadline to apply for work and study permits under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel program has been pushed back a year to March 31, 2026.

The original deadline was set for the end of March 2025.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Manitoba (UCC) said they are pleased with the decision.

“This will go a long way to meeting the consular needs of Ukrainians living in Manitoba,” the spokesperson said in an email.

Orest Cap, a professor emeritus at the University of Manitoba and a representative for the UCC, said if this deadline hadn’t been extended, some serious problems could have arisen.

“It would have created several problems. One is their work permit could have been expired,” said Cap, noting it could have impacted family members and the ability to afford things like housing.

He said this decision will help many provide stability in their lives for another year.

“It’s good. It’s positive news, and it hopefully adds some answers…for the families that are here.”

He said this may also help those who are looking to apply for permanent residency to get started on that process.
